Special Guest: Lisa Avelleyra- Author of “Get Me To The Abbey”

“I didn’t care about anything – except Vodka.” That’s the opening line of Lisa Avellyra’s book, and she joins Mike and Glenn in the coffee shop to talk about her story of experience, hope and strength.

Lisa was a lifelong drinker – drinking in college, drinking after college. After 40 years of drinking it caught up with her. Lisa didn’t want to live without drinking, but she knew she couldn’t sustain how she was drinking – so the easiest path in her eyes was to not live anymore. She failed at that objective. The beginning of her book starts here, at rock bottom. It could have been the end of her story, but it was just the beginning.

Success in A.A.

Big scientific studies and addiction centers tout the results of AA or their programs. But is it all bulls&^%? How do they measure the data? Mike and Glenn talk about data surrounding the success of AA, their experiences, and challenge others: the success on the path of recovery in  AA is directly correlated with the amount and level that you have surrendered and placed priority on working the steps of AA.

Claudia / Women & Recovery

Claudia is at the coffee shop today discussing recovery and specific challenges it presents for women. Recovery is a hard road to navigate and it takes intense focus. It’s a selfish program. For women who have been taught their whole life to give – to families, to children, to spouses – it’s hard to shut down that part and focus on themselves.

Not only are there challenges to giving up the obsession with alcohol – but also navigating relationships, trying to fight stuff that’s not good for you (codependency, toxic behaviors) and the emotional aspects of why we chose to drink. There is a strong connectivity to emotional sobriety. For Claudia, it’s been a real challenge. Listen in as she shares her experiences with Mike and Glenn.

Claudia’s Story

Friend in the house! It’s a table for 3 today with Claudia joining Mike and Glenn in the coffee shop sharing her story of experience, strength and hope. Claudia shares that you are never too old to get sober – she started her recovery journey at 50.

Claudia didn’t have alcoholic parents, she came from a comfortable family and always had good grades, was thoughtful of others and sometimes a shy girl. But at 26 she found herself divorced without the confidence or emotional sobriety she needed and was navigating life half-heartedly – looking for people, places and things to bring her back security. She started dealing with daily life with a drink. It wasn’t until her second DUI and a night in jail that she knew she was ready to stop drinking.

Karen Returns: “Keys & Value of Sponsorship”

At a table for 3, Karen joins Mike & Glenn to talk about sponsors in the 12 steps. What is a sponsor? How do you pick a sponsor? How do you fire a sponsor? What about paid sober coaches? What benefits have you received from being a sponsor?

Join Karen, Mike & Glenn as they get real in their discussion of sponsors, the value of sponsorship, and talk about their own journey along the 12 steps.

Karen Joins to Chat About “Owning Your Shit”

Karen joins Sober.Coffee at a table for three, talking about owning your own shit. In her words, “It’s your fault, asshole”.

How does owning your own shit affect sobriety? Human nature is to find fault. Instead of looking inward, we look outward for whose fault it is. Karen talks about her own recovery journey and tells us when she can own her shit, blame herself for her own problems, then she can truly recover – because if she can’t be honest with herself, she can’t recover.

ProSobriety Series: – AA Alternative(s) Part 6 -Celebrate Recovery

Darren joins Mike & Glenn in the coffee shop to talk about Celebrate Recovery. Darren has dealt with alcohol addiction in his own life for 30 years, off again and on again. He went to hundreds of AA meetings but never really connected with it – then found Celebrate Recovery.

Celebrate Recovery is about hurts, habits and hangups. While Celebrate Recovery is still a 12 step program with very similar steps to AA, Celebrate Recovery talks about God and Jesus and is very religious based including prayer, scripture and worship songs. Each of the 12 steps adds bible verses that connect to the step and members participate in a step study as a group instead of with a sponsor.
