Coffee with a Twist: Introducing SillySips

Kyle & Josh are in the coffee shop today talking Silly Sips Coffee! Friends since 7th grade, both Kyle and Josh are on their own journey to recovery. What does that have to do with coffee? When Kyle quit drinking, coffee became his go-to beverage of choice. With an opportunity to start a business with Josh, they chose coffee – and giving back.

Silly Sips Coffee donates 10% of profits to Child Mind Institute, a non-profit organization that supports kids and provides resources and tools for children who struggle with mental health such as depression, anxiety and more. It’s personal for Kyle as his struggle with alcohol began by self medicating with alcohol to curb his own anxiety. Josh as well – he admits he could have used this kind of help when he was younger.

Listen in to their story and see how the Silly Sips Coffee movement is growing!

Special Guest: Lisa Avelleyra- Author of “Get Me To The Abbey”

“I didn’t care about anything – except Vodka.” That’s the opening line of Lisa Avellyra’s book, and she joins Mike and Glenn in the coffee shop to talk about her story of experience, hope and strength.

Lisa was a lifelong drinker – drinking in college, drinking after college. After 40 years of drinking it caught up with her. Lisa didn’t want to live without drinking, but she knew she couldn’t sustain how she was drinking – so the easiest path in her eyes was to not live anymore. She failed at that objective. The beginning of her book starts here, at rock bottom. It could have been the end of her story, but it was just the beginning.

Success in A.A.

Big scientific studies and addiction centers tout the results of AA or their programs. But is it all bulls&^%? How do they measure the data? Mike and Glenn talk about data surrounding the success of AA, their experiences, and challenge others: the success on the path of recovery in  AA is directly correlated with the amount and level that you have surrendered and placed priority on working the steps of AA.

Claudia / Women & Recovery

Claudia is at the coffee shop today discussing recovery and specific challenges it presents for women. Recovery is a hard road to navigate and it takes intense focus. It’s a selfish program. For women who have been taught their whole life to give – to families, to children, to spouses – it’s hard to shut down that part and focus on themselves.

Not only are there challenges to giving up the obsession with alcohol – but also navigating relationships, trying to fight stuff that’s not good for you (codependency, toxic behaviors) and the emotional aspects of why we chose to drink. There is a strong connectivity to emotional sobriety. For Claudia, it’s been a real challenge. Listen in as she shares her experiences with Mike and Glenn.
